Teacher Training
New studio, familiar face. Even though I’ve been going to classes at the Ballard studio all week, tonight I decided to pop into the Greenwood CorePower Yoga studio to take the Hot Power Fusion By Candlelight class with Jill. I loved seeing Jill’s familiar face at the front desk. I also loved how the Greenwood studio wasn’t nearly as crowded as the Ballard studio. There were plenty of lockers available and plenty of room to move around in the changing room. I didn’t feel like I had to huddle in a corner as I changed my clothes both before and after class. That’s an especially nice feature when you’re covered in sweat after class.
When I walked in to the yoga studio, there were also plenty of open spots to set up in. By habit, I scoped out the back row as soon as I walked into the studio. I then quickly talked myself out of it as soon as I saw a spot in the front, left-hand corner wide open. I snagged the spot in the front row and set up my mat. Tonight, there would be no one blocking my view in the front mirror. Already class was getting off to a good start and it hadn’t even started yet.
Since this was Hot Power Fusion By Candlelight, it meant there would be no overhead studio lights on during class. Instead, there were battery-powered candles flickering all over the room. The lobby’s lights shined into the room through the studio door and lit up my corner in the front row. I was perfectly okay with that. The extra light from the lobby enabled me to check myself out in the front mirror during class whenever I wanted to look, helping me adjust my alignment and positioning in postures as we moved through class.
I loved the intimacy of doing the postures in class by candlelight. I liked not being forced to stare at myself the entire time. When I did look in the front mirror, I could only see my silhouette anyways, which was way more flattering than my normally well-lit counterpart.
This was the first Hot Power Fusion class where I wasn’t mentally comparing the Hot Power Fusion sequence to Bikram Yoga the entire time. And for the first time ever, I actually “flowed” into some of the postures during class. These were pretty big milestones for me because up until now, I had been relying on watching the other students in class to see what posture comes next and where to place my arms and hands during some of the postures.
After class, I had a chance to meet a couple new yoga friends, some of which had recently gone through the Hot Power Fusion teacher training program. One woman was in her last week of the extension training program which meant her audition to teach at CorePower Yoga would be right around the corner. Talking to these women after class was super inspiring. I’m starting to build my tribe of people whom I can geek out with about everything yoga. Yay for yoga friends!
