Teacher Training

I brought my husband with me to Mandy’s 5:30 Hot Power Fusion class at the Greenwood studio tonight. The couple that does hot yoga together stays together! Since I had a teacher training group session at 7:30, I figured why not come a couple of hours early to take a Hot Power Fusion class? I wasn’t the only one who had the same idea. There were a couple of other fellow yoga teacher trainees in class with me as well.

It was super bright and sunny outside and I felt blah on the inside. Not that I didn’t want to be in class. I always love Hot Power Fusion with Mandy. I just didn’t feel as energized as I normally do for class. It was probably a combination of needing to drink more water and from spending all day working inside. I was feeling especially Vitamin D deficient today or maybe I just really wanted to go outside and play. This was something I had to work through in class tonight.

At the beginning of class, Mandy asked us all to grab a block. We typically don’t use blocks in Hot Power Fusion unless it’s for an option or modification of a posture, like sitting on a block in Fixed Firm instead of going all the way down to the mat. During Standing Forehead to Knee and Standing Bow pose, Mandy gave us all an extra balancing challenge and had us stand on the block during both postures. At first I thought there was no way I’d be able to do this. I barely had enough energy to get myself into class tonight. I quieted the doubt talk and gave it a try anyways. Yes, it was super challenging. My standing leg shook the entire time, but I loved the extra challenge. Way to go Mandy for spicing things up from the HPF norm!

The core section was a wee bit different from the HPF norm as well. During Supta Baddha Konasana Sit Ups, we used the block again. This time, Mandy cued us to hold the block in-between our thighs and hold ourselves up while engaging our core instead of just doing the traditional up and down motions of the sit-ups.

Mandy gave me a hands-on assist during Full Locust in class tonight. With her help of pulling me up slightly by the shoulders, I was able to lift my chest up even higher in that posture than I normally can on my own. It felt great.
