Teacher Training

Tonight’s Hot Power Fusion class was especially special for a couple of different reasons. First off, I hit a CorePower Yoga Teacher Training milestone. Tonight’s class was the 16th Hot Power Fusion class I’ve taken during my training. This means I’ve completed the Hot Power Fusion class part of my graduation requirement of taking 60 asana yoga classes. The complete breakdown for the graduation requirement goes like this: (16) Hot Power Fusion classes, (39) other CorePower Yoga classes including C1, C1.5, C2, Yoga Sculpt, and CoreRestore, (2) observations of a Hot Power Fusion class and (3) outside yoga classes, any yoga style of our choice. This comes out to 60 yoga classes in 60 days. After tonight’s class, I’m at a total of 25 classes so far. Even though I don’t have to take any more Hot Power Fusion classes to meet this requirement, I still plan on taking quite a few more HPF classes during the rest of my training. Each time I take an HPF class, I’m able to study the cues and am one step closer to memorizing the sequence.

There were only six of us in class tonight, including our teacher, Christine. I loved being in such a small class for a change instead of a packed house. This was in no way of reflection of Christine’s teaching. Today was the first sunny Friday we’ve had in Seattle in a long time. It was also the day after Saint Patrick’s Day. I’m sure a lot of people were either out enjoying the sunshine or recovering from the night before so I could see why going to a Hot Power Fusion class would be the furthest thing from their mind.

Another reason why tonight’s Hot Power Fusion class was especially special? My husband came with me to class again tonight, again! I love going to yoga, but going to yoga with my husband is way more fun than going solo. It’s a completely different experience when you get to suffer with someone else in the room that you know and love. It becomes less of a personal challenge and more of a bonding experience. My favorite part of taking any yoga class with my husband is as we’re coming up to sitting after Savasana. As soon as the teacher cues us to pick our favorite side to come up on, my husband and I always pick the side where we’re facing each other. As we lay there on our extended arms, we slightly open our eyes, stick out our tongues at each other and blow each other kisses. Cheesy, I know, but with all of the yoga I’ve been doing lately, something like this makes the whole experience better and more special to me. I’m really lucky. Not a lot of people can say they’re husbands happily join them for yoga on a regular basis, especially taking two classes, back-to-back from each other.

I received two different hands-on assists from Christine during class – one during Triangle and one during Half Pigeon Pose. The hands-on assist during Triangle was to help guide my arm straight up over my head. The hands-on assist in Half Pigeon just felt amazing, especially the calf rub at the end.

I didn’t know this when we first started class tonight, but this was Christine’s first time teaching an HPF class. None of us knew until she made the announcement at the end of class. She did an awesome job! After class, I went to the front desk to tell Christine how great of a job I thought she did and thanked her for class. I asked her if she was nervous about teaching her first class. She said she was, but she was all smiles and super happy with how class went. We both agreed – taking a yoga class and teaching a yoga class are two completely different things. I shared with her how in my own practice teaching, I feel like I’m all over the place, stuttering, and blanking on what to say next. She reassured me those anxious feelings would soon go away. Christine’s experience with teaching her first HPF class inspired me to want to teach my own first class one day. I was so happy to be a part of one of her teaching milestones tonight. Right now, I feel like I’m so far away from my own experience, but I know it will be here a lot sooner than I think.
