Teacher Training

Tonight was my first yoga class back after taking the last three days off. I took my very first Yoga Sculpt class on Saturday morning with Sunny, which was awesome! Due to being super busy with work and my husband coming back into town after being gone for the past several weeks, I hadn’t taken a yoga class since my Saturday class with Sunny. I ended up paying the price physically for taking those days off in tonight’s class though. My body was really tight and sore. My shoulders were still sore from Sunny’s class on Saturday!

With all of the aches, tightness and soreness aside, I had a special guest with me in Mandy’s Hot Power Fusion By Candlelight class tonight. I brought my husband! This was his first yoga class at CorePower Yoga. I wanted him to see and get to experience a little bit of what I’ve been learning in my yoga teacher training so far. I’ve dragged him with me to Bikram Yoga before and he ended up loving it. I figured he would enjoy Hot Power Fusion too.

As he was getting his two free weeks set up at the front desk, I set up our mats in the studio. We had a few moments to settle in and catch our breath before class started. During class, I tried to close my eyes as much as possible and listen to Mandy’s cues. Even though I’ve been running through my flashcards in-between our group sessions, attending Mandy’s class tonight reminded me that I needed to spend more time memorizing the sequence and practice teaching at home. So far, I’ve gone through one round of practice teaching with my husband. Unfortunately, my flashcards weren’t very organized so it was a rough round of yoga for him. I decided to re-do my flashcards before putting him through another round of practice teaching. Clearly, Mandy’s class was much more smooth for my husband than it was when I was practicing the sequence with him at home.

After class, my husband commented on how fast the class was. I had never even thought of that before. Tonight was my 11th Hot Power Fusion class. By now, the sequence is pretty familiar to me, until I stand up in front of my yoga teacher training group and have to teach it! My husband is used to coming to Bikram Yoga with me where class is 90 minutes and each posture is done twice and held anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute at a time.

I didn’t really set my husband up for success in his first class tonight and I felt pretty bad about it. First of all, I set us up in the front row for class. This made it difficult for him to watch me and the other people around him during class to see what they were doing. Since he wasn’t familiar with the sequence or the cues, he got a bit lost at times. Then to make matters worse, the class was done by candlelight, making it even tougher for him the follow along. He did tell me he enjoyed the class, was excited to recognize a few familiar postures and that he was excited to come back for another class. I’m totally holding him to that!
