Teacher Training

Tonight’s group session for yoga teacher training was an entire three-hour Posture Clinic. We went through each of the postures in the Flowing Balancing Series starting with Standing Forehead to Knee Pose all the way through the Triangle Series, ending at Toppling Tree. We covered a total of 13 postures!

A Posture Clinic in a CorePower Yoga teacher training group session is when we all get our handbooks out and talk about a posture in detail as a group, starting with the breath and then going into the Sanskrit name for the posture, benefits of the posture and cues to give during the posture for the feet/legs, pelvis/spine and arms/head.

After covering the basics of each posture, one person in class gets up on a yoga mat set up in the middle of the group. This person acts as a “posture model” and demonstrates the posture while someone else in class cues the “model” on how to get into the posture from the previous posture in the sequence. We also go over suggested cues for misalignments as well as modifications for each posture.

For some reason, tonight seemed long to me. Maybe I was just tired from a long workweek and from doing a double dose of yoga the night before. It’s hard for me doing the group sessions until 10:30 at night, especially on a work night when I’ve only had six to seven hours of sleep the night before. I’m usually in bed between 9 and 10!

I need to keep reminding myself this is what I want to do and I’m exactly where I need to be. Yoga teacher training is only eight weeks. Yes, it’s a huge time commitment, but by putting in the time now, it will pay off in the near future. In the meantime, I’ll do my best to enjoy the entire process.
